How and when to add synonyms

Modified on: Wed, Jan 17, 2018 at 11:27 AM

Thanks to the synonyms functionality you can set the same search results for different search queries.

What is a synonym?

A synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language.

How to use synonyms?

For example, declare a synonym for the word "ipad" to be "tablet". When the word "tablet" is searched in the storefront, the search results will be the same as if the word "ipad" was searched. In both cases, the result for "ipad" will be shown.

Note: this will work differently in reverse: if you set "ipad" to be a synonym for "tablet", then both searches will return the result for "tablet".

Let’s create the phrase “iphone” as a synonym for our product “Wolfsblut - Alaska Salmon”.

Go to the Synonyms tab and click the green plus button. Add a couple of synonyms separated by comma to any search query. Here you can see that we’ve added the “iphone” word to the “alaska” search query.

Next, click Save Items. Smart Search & Instant Search will start indexing your catalog automatically. This process will take a few minutes.

After the indexation is complete, you can go to our storefront and test synonyms. Try to search “iphone” and the widget will show you the “Wolfsblut - Alaska Salmon” product.

You can also export and import synonyms through CSV files in the Export/Import tab. Please note that the CSV file size is limited with the server settings. At the moment the maximum file size is 2 MB.

How else can I use synonyms?

Punctuation marks.

Let’s suppose your customers use different variants of product names for search queries. For example, they type in "xp203" whereas your product name includes "xp-203". As a result the product won’t be found. Here’s when synonyms come in handy!

Plurals.

You can also use synonyms to refer the plural form of a noun to its singular form in the product name and vice versa. For example, when your customers search for "chocolates", Milka chocolate will be shown in the search results. If you do not use synonyms, nothing will be found.

P.S.

Every synonym could be added to the suggestion dictionary. Just point the “Add to suggestion list” checkbox.

Next, go to the Suggestion dictionary tab and find there your synonym as search suggestion. Every suggestion has its priority. Set high priority to promote search suggestions among your customers.
